What it’s Like, Plus 3 Reasons Hiring a Party Planner is a

No-Brainer

If you’ve never worked with a party planner for an event, now is the time to start. Asap. Yesterday.

It may seem like an extra expense, but partnering with professionals like Myri Dujovne, Founder and Head Party Thrower of Fun and Confetti, is one of the best investments you can make for an event.

Professional party planners don’t just take your idea and plan out the details. Their experience, insight, and expertise can take your event from mediocre to “a whole experience.” (Just check out the client love section of Fun & Confetti’s website! You’ll see what we mean.)

If you work with a party planner, you get someone who specializes in planning, organizing, and (depending on the scope of the service) even executing an event. On top of all that? You get the opportunity to (gasp!) actually enjoy your own event without constantly wondering if everything is going according to plan or checking in with various vendors.

What It’s Like to Work With A Party Planner

So, what’s it like to work with a party planner? The process usually starts with meeting your planner to discuss the details of your event.

In that discussion, a good planner will dig for enough details to get to the next stage, which is when bigger decisions start happening.

Keep in mind that when you partner with your planner, they’ll support you by holding you to your vision, and focusing all decision-making in the direction of your dream event. “Every time that [clients are] making decisions, I remind them of what we're going for,” says Myri. It’s not just about nagging you to stay on budget or “on track,” it’s about ensuring that all the details, decisions, and elements of your event are cohesive and actually create the event as you imagine it.

It’s easy to get lost down the rabbit hole and either try and do too much… or not enough. Myri has first-hand experience with this, and it seems like it’s a pretty standard trend. She says, “Some people are indecisive because they like everything, and some people are indecisive because they don't like anything… those are two really different types of people.”

Maybe you’re the type of person who gets excited about every detail, wants your hands in every pot, and tends to expect or want everything. OR maybe you’re the type of person who just doesn’t like to commit, isn’t quite sure what you want, and (in an ideal world) would let someone else take the reins.

Good news, friend. No matter what type of person you are, a professional event planner can give you exactly what kind of support you need. With the right questions and interviewing techniques, they’ll help you to nail down exactly what you’re looking for—then figure out how to make it happen.

3 Key Reasons Hiring a Party Planner is a No-Brainer

Tons of benefits happen behind the scenes when you partner with a party planner. Want the inside details? Here’s a glimpse of what you get…

  1. They’ve done this a bajillion times before. Okay, but what does that mean for you? It means that while you may have helped plan your cousin’s graduation party or your wedding, you don’t plan multiple events on a monthly (or even weekly!) basis. They simply have more experience and expertise than you. They’ve problem-solved, established connections, and honed their skills to deal with every aspect of event planning. And it shows.

  1. They’re incredibly creative and skilled at prioritization. They don’t get bogged down with details, unlike the rest of us. They know where to focus next, and they tap into their creative side to come up with solutions and workarounds that you’d likely miss. Not only that, but they’re creative enough to hear what you have in mind and make it a reality.

  1. The hidden bonuses. Because of their experience, they likely bring other big wins to the table. Often, that comes through connections with other industry professionals that make planning your event so much easier, or connections that allow them to smooth the way for you more than you’d be able to do alone. Suddenly, your job becomes “show up at your own event” instead of executing and planning the event, and then checking in with everyone on the day of.

What to Look for from a Party Planner (According to Professionals)

When it comes to choosing the right party planner or professional for your event, there are some key elements you should always consider. We got a lot of this list directly from Myri, so you know we’re serious when someone inside the profession is telling you “Don’t hire someone without THIS!”

  1. Insurance

Her top recommendation? Always, always, always look for someone who has insurance. “Insurance is one of the things that I think shows professionalism,” Myri told us. Not only does this show that they take their profession seriously, but it also protects both you and the planner, and it allows more freedom for creativity on their end.

  1. A Specific Method

If your candidate is always winging things and doesn’t have a process down or a method, isn’t asking tons of questions, communicating well (or even over-communicating), that’s a red flag. A developed method shows that they’ve got enough experience and have structured their processes, services, and business around that method.

  1. Professional Touches

Professional touches are always a good sign. Things like specific processes, client relationship management tools, professional payment platforms, etc. Someone who relies on Craigslist posts or doesn’t accept anything but cash is simply not going to be as established and professional as someone who has those other professional elements. Signs you’re on the right track: they feel exceptionally organized and things feel simple for you, the client from the get-go.

These are just the start. There are other things to look for of course, like portfolio and event planning history, but we believe these are a solid foundation that can help you identify exactly what you should look for as you search for the right fit.
